Michael Phelps may have won eight gold medals and has been deemed the “greatest Olympian of all-time” at the 2008 Olympic Games… but lets not forget his mother!
Jonhson’s Baby has named Michael’s mother, Debbie Phelps their “Mom of the Olympic Games!”
Johnson’s Baby Company will donate money in Debbie Phelps’ name to children’s causes. The “Mom of the Olympic Games” award came as a nice surprise to Debbie Phelps, a middle school principal, who told PEOPLE that she is, “so honored.”
Debbie is also the national spokesperson for the Facebook group ADHD Moms.
As Debbie explained, “I just felt I had a voice to be able to share with the moms online community about ADHD,” she says. “We do podcasts and articles.” Michael was diagnosed with ADHD when he was nine years old.
Michael “was non-stop, always going, always questioning,” Debbie said. “When the teachers brought it to my attention about his lack of focus in the classroom, that’s when I got concerned. When he was nine, 10, 11 years old, he would sit at the pool for hours,” she said. “That’s why when I was talking with his teachers, and they’d say, ‘He can’t focus on anything,’ I’d say, ‘Well yes he can! He can focus on the pool.’ … He was able to focus on what he loved.”
Michael and his mother were able to find help for his ADHD. Debbie Phelps is working hard in spreading information and support for mothers who need answers and support.
Congratulations to this true “Mom of the Olympic Games!”
